Protected species & fauna surveys

A number of plant and animal species are protected under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, and/or The Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010. Badgers even have their own piece of legislation, the Protection of Badger Act 1992. Many of these species are widespread. For example, bats, badgers, great crested newts and slow worms can be found on many sites, from rural to inner-city urban, and there are severe penalties for those who inadvertently disturb or harm them.

Surveys for most protected species can only be conducted when the animals are active. So, it is critical that such surveys are carried out at the correct time of year and under appropriate weather conditions. The Ecology Consultancy works closely with clients in planning and conducting protected species surveys to help them work with wildlife and stay within the law. Our ecologists hold licences for the full range of protected species, including bats, great crested newts, white-clawed crayfish and dormice. We provide pragmatic and practical advice on mitigation measures, and undertake the necessary works to achieve a successful result for both the client and wildlife.

The Ecology Consultancy offers the full range of surveys including:
  • European protected species surveys - bats, great crested newts, dormice, otters etc.
  • Other protected and UK Biodiversity Action Plan species such as badger, red squirrel, hedgehog, and water vole survey
  • Reptile and amphibian surveys
  • Bird surveys, including breeding and wintering bird surveys and vantage point surveys
  • Terrestrial invertebrate surveys
  • Aquatic surveys, including white-clawed crayfish, meiofauna and fish
