The Ecology Consultancy was Highly Commended in the 2018 CIEEM Awards Knowledge Sharing category for their School Ecology Workshops initiative.
The awards ceremony was held at Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London on Thursday 21st June and aimed to celebrate excellence across the fields of ecology and environmental management, highlighting a range of innovative projects and examples of best practice throughout the UK. The ceremony also highlighted CIEEM’s role in championing the importance and practice of ecology and recognising achievement and individual excellence within the industry.
The School Ecology Workshop initiative was launched by The Ecology Consultancy in 2017 to provide opportunities for developers and the construction industry to engage with local communities in ecological issues associated with either the building and refurbishment of schools or developments close to schools. The workshops consist of classroom based educational workshops aimed at educating and inspiring school pupils about ecology and the natural environment. The workshops also have a wider objective in aiding developers in their corporate social responsibility activities by fostering positive understanding of the development within the local community and by leaving a lasting positive legacy in the area once the project has been completed.
In attendance at the awards and representing The Ecology Consultancy were a team of colleagues who were instrumental in developing the workshop initiative, running the individual workshops in schools themselves, and successfully promoting the idea to the development and construction sector. They were delighted to also be joined by Andrea Lund, Community Engagement Coordinator at Farrans, who worked with the team on providing a School Ecology Workshop at Avanti House School in Stanmore as well as supporting the award submission.
Since the launch of the project, School Workshops have now been conducted with a number of other large construction companies including Farrans, Bovis Homes, Thames Tideway, Linden Homes and Taylor Wimpey, with the initiative now being rolled out across The Ecology Consultancy’s regional offices.
In addition to entering the Knowledge Sharing award, and as part of a continuing commitment to celebrating and supporting industry talent, The Ecology Consultancy were proud to support the 2018 CIEEM Awards again, this year by sponsoring the drinks reception; ensuring that the great and good in ecology were suitably refreshed before the awards ceremony.
