Temple Group seeks expansion through the acquisition of The Ecology Consultancy

Monday, December 9th, 2013

Temple Group have announced that it has acquired The Ecology Consultancy which becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of the Group including a significant share in The Green Roof Consultancy. The Ecology Consultancy is one of the UK’s foremost ecology consultancies and is a well-established, reputable and profitable business. Temple Group is a leading environment, planning and sustainability consultancy in the UK with a first class pedigree in delivering infrastructure and development projects.

The acquisition builds on a 15-year close working relationship between the two Managing Directors as well as a shared ethos towards developing their teams and delivering value for clients. Mark Southwood, Managing Director of Temple Group, and John Newton, Managing Director of The Ecology Consultancy have collaborated on successful projects starting with the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in the late 1990’s. Recent examples of joint working include High Speed 2, Transport for London projects and a number of sustainability programmes for infrastructure projects, renewable energy and residential and building developments.

This acquisition brings together two of the strongest and fastest growing independent environmental consultancies in the UK. It will expand the breadth of services within Temple’s core competency of Environmental Impact Assessment, as well as extend its environment, planning and sustainability offer. The companies will jointly benefit from a strong competitive market offer, a cross fertilisation of clients and expertise, access into new sectors, and a wider geographical reach. It is anticipated that clients will benefit from: increased project efficacy through closer integrated working across the team; and, added project value through combined expert insight, joint briefings and shared learning programmes.

The Ecology Consultancy will continue to be managed and led by John Newton and will keep its separate market-leading brand and identity. Together Temple and The Ecology Consultancy have a 120+ strong in house team in London which is further enhanced by an established Associate network of over 100 senior practitioners, providing national coverage but also ideally placed to serve clients and projects in the capital and across the South and South East. Collectively they also have local offices in Edinburgh, Norwich and Sussex (Lewes and Haywards Heath).

Mark Southwood, Managing Director, Temple Group, said, “It’s a win-win for clients and staff. Bringing these two great teams together will further enhance Temple’s reputation as a top-tier leader in the environment, planning and sustainability arena. We have listened to our clients and this move responds to their needs and the growing demand we are experiencing for these services, particularly in the development sector and in relation to major infrastructure projects. Our shared vision and commitment to innovation and best practice will bring tangible benefit clients and staff in the short and medium term”.

John Newton, Managing Director, The Ecology Consultancy, commented, “For us this is an important stage in The Ecology Consultancy’s evolution and, from a position of financial strength, we can confidently build our next chapter. This deal offers real opportunity to the senior team to help shape the business strategy so as to realise the Temple advantage in full and continue to succeed in the environmental market. Temple brings project management skills and a specialist capability in Environmental Impact Assessment and town planning, whilst we will strengthen biodiversity in their sustainability offering.”
