The Ecology Consultancy’s School Ecology Workshop initiative has been announced as a finalist for the ‘Knowledge Sharing’ category at the 2018 CIEEM Awards, taking place at Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London on Thursday 21st June.
The School Ecology Workshops were launched by The Ecology Consultancy in 2017 to promote opportunities for developers and the construction industry to engage with local communities in ecological issues associated with building and refurbishment of schools and nearby projects. The programme of ecology based educational workshops are designed to educate and inspire school pupils about ecology and the natural environment and aid developers in their corporate social responsibility activities.
Members of The Ecology Consultancy’s team of expert ecologists visit local primary schools to provide wildlife themed, classroom based, workshops to educate pupils about how developments are being carried out in a way that protects local wildlife, whilst also providing a broader view of the project’s environmental activities in conjunction with members of the developer’s project team.
A short pilot scheme was run with Linden Homes at local primary school Churchill CoE in Westerham, a second workshop was provided for Farrans at Avanti House School and a further workshop was provided with Bovis Homes at Browick Primary School, Wymondham. More recently, workshops have been conducted with Thames Tideway in London and Taylor Wimpey in Norfolk. By directly focussing on locally important issues the workshops promote positive understanding among the local community about development projects, as well as increasing appreciation of local habitats and species.
