“The Council commissioned consultant architects who instructed The Ecology Consultancy to carry out an initial assessment of properties due for demolition in Gomshall. We were very satisfied with the report and initial advice, which was thorough and clear. Following this, we decided to appoint The Ecology Consultancy to undertake all ecology site work for the project. They were very committed to the project, and put a lot of effort into helping us develop the optimum timetable for demolition, given the habitat and lifecycle requirements of the different species on the site. They took a lead role in preparing and submitting the bat licence and dealt with all matters in relation to it directly with Natural England. This required prompt action to meet tight deadlines. On occasion, we required them to attend client meetings with Council officers and the demolition contractor, when they were able to offer solutions to achieve savings in both time and cost.
The ecologists’ interaction with residents adjacent to the site was excellent and they were particularly sensitive to local issues. The demolition contractor was particularly impressed with their co-operative approach on site and in co-ordinating and carrying out the work identified in the mitigation recommendations. Some complex issues arose in translocating the slow worms from the site. This could have impacted adversely on the construction timetable had The Ecology Consultancy not been able to carry out extra weekend visits to the site at short notice.
Communication was always prompt and effective and physical work rate on site was consistently high. This resulted in the mitigation work for the bats being completed with a substantial reduction in the time allocated. Their commitment exceeded expectations and this was particularly evident in their approach to finding cost-effective solutions. One example of this was when they were able to advise on the possibility of a gratis roost visit offered by one of their staff who was a Roost Visitor for Natural England.
We would definitely appoint them again, with confidence, for similar work.”
