Field Assistant - Lewes, Sussex (2018)

Are you looking to get into ecology or wanting to develop your existing survey skills? Would you like to work within a small, dynamic and well established team of ecologists in our Sussex Office?

The Ecology Consultancy are seeking to recruit field assistants on temporary contracts for our 2018 survey season. You may be required to work on a variety of projects throughout the survey season or be focussed on one larger project, depending on our workload. In general you would be assisting on surveys for protected species such as bats, reptiles and great crested newts and with other areas of our work, as required.

The Ecology Consultancy has been operating since 1999 and our regional office, just outside of Lewes in Sussex, has been trading since 2007. We are the largest dedicated ecology company in the county and have forged close relationships with the private and public sector. Our workload includes survey, assessment and mitigation work on a wide variety of projects comprising; small to large scale housing developments, road, rail and port infrastructure, historic building renovation and district wide habitat and green infrastructure appraisals. Our clients include firms of architects, planning consultants, engineering companies, statutory agencies and local authorities.

The post will be based from our Sussex office with the main areas of work being Sussex, Kent and Surrey. The project based nature of our work means that there will be a requirement to undertake travel as is necessary to successfully carry out contracts. You may also be required to assist on large-scale bat projects which will require night time work and unsociable hours.

Person specification

The Field Assistant will need the following:

Essential

  • An appropriate (or equivalent) degree qualification, or studying towards one;
  • Personable manner, motivated and good organisational skills;
  • Be willing to work during evenings and at weekends;
  • Have a full clean UK driving licence;
  • Good data management/Quality Assurance

Desirable

  • Experience of protected species such as reptile, great crested newt and bat surveys;
  • Experience with other species groups/habitat would be an advantage;
  • CIEEM Graduate or Associate Membership
