Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea
Objective: Quantified mammal surveyThe largest of the sites included Holland Park (22ha) and Little Wormwood Scrubs (9ha), but the survey included very small sites such as Cremorne Gardens (1ha).
The Borough’s Ecology Service had previously designed a methodology for a quantified mammal survey (excluding bats) to be repeated every ten years, having established the species diversity present at each site and recorded the distribution of mammals, with the exception of bats, in the borough. This information will feed into site specific recommendations for habitat improvement which can be undertaken to benefit the mammal populations.
Mammals recorded in 2010 include yellow-necked mouse, wood mouse, bank vole, hedgehog, field vole, weasel, rabbit and fox.
